Karmapa News Archive
News links and search tools
Upon his escape from
Tibet, the Karmapa was the subject of intense press coverage. The Karmapa News Archive presents a fascinating picture of the world's reaction to the "thunder out of China," as Time Magazine put it (see link to the right), one of the media's descriptions better descriptions of the impact of the Gyalwang Karmapa's daring escape from Tibet to India in search of religious freedom.
2000 was relatively early in the life of the public 'net, but already the world press and media had just begun to open the content in their websites to enterprising searchers. Foreshadowing the role of blogs in today's internet, Nalandabodhi used volunteer webophiles and its newly created website to provide hourly commentary on the press and media reports about the Karmapa's escape and his early years in India. The formatting of the website in the early days reflects the struggles to get this new medium 'right' as the news poured in from around the world.
The archives commence with the Karmapa's stunning arrival in Dharamsala in 2000, and continue for two years, reflecting the fascination of the world with the Karmapa's life in India. |
