5 Sciences

Nalanda West is a center for ecumenical, nonsectarian inquiry into and application of the science of the mind, with the goal of supporting the flourishing of human well-being. Based in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, we welcome all wisdom traditions to join us in this exploration.

We offer a contemplative space in the Fremont / Wallingford neighborhood of Seattle for workshops, programs, retreats, events, and other activities.

Our inspiration comes from the ancient Indian university of Nalanda, which was known in its time as a place where Buddhist and non-Buddhist traditions came together in service of understanding universal human values. This renowned University, the first of its kind, flourished for over 1,000 years.

It served as the meeting place and crucible for the spiritual, academic, and cultural traditions of its time.

Why a Science of Mind?

The Buddhist approach is in harmony with the rational approach of the scientific method,
in which the path of understanding our inner and outer worlds
begins with questions, not answers.

The Buddha said:

"As the wise test gold by burning, cutting and rubbing it, so are you to accept my words after examining them, and not merely out of regard for me."

- from the Jnanasara-samuccaya

Nalanda West provides many opportunities to learn about and explore in-depth the nature of your mind and experience.
