Bringing Adverse Conditions to the Path: Jim Scott teaches on a song by Gyalwa Götsangpa

During his many years of practice in mountain retreats, Gyalwa Götsangpa became severely ill on several occasions. He did not leave his retreat to try to find a doctor. He did not go to the hospital. He did not seek out medicine, but stayed in the mountains and meditated upon the essential nature of his illness. By doing so, he had a wonderful support for his meditation. As a result, he became completely free from illness and attained realization. He sang many songs about taking illness onto the path.

Please join us for a special evening talk by the singing yogi Jim Scott on “The Eight Cases of Basic Goodness Not to Be Shunned,” Lord Götsangpa’s profound song instructing how to bring adverse conditions to the path.

Songs for Waking the Heart with Jim Scott

The view of Khenpo Tsültrim Gyamtso Rinpoche's teachings on emptiness is at once vast and profound. It's easy to forget that in his Progressive Stages of Meditation on Emptiness the emphasis lies mainly on practice as a way to investigate, experience, and realize shunyata. He offers us a way to gain certainty as we work with our minds and relate to emptiness.

In this weekend of guided practice sessions we will explore the interactions of view and practice through short teachings, guided meditation practice, and discussions. By coming together to explore the space where view and practice meet, we may come to realize how to relate to the world we inhabit with greater openness and kindness. We can actually make our world gentler and more vibrant.

New Articles from Acharya Lhakpa

Great teachings from NBNY's resident teacher's blog. Just added:
1. Reflections about being a Buddhist in NYC 2010
...Decades ago, scientists had a dream to develop technologies that would do our work for us. So we could do things easily and rest more. Now we have these things...Do we think we are resting more?
2. Filling the Potholes on the Highway of the 3 Yanas
...we often miss the basic things that are important for being a practitioner. One would not be successful on the path without renouncing the ten non-virtues...

Buddhism in the Prison System

Mind Without Borders provides inmates the possibility of studying the Buddhadharma through Nalandabodhi curriculum correspondence courses. This provides a structure around which communication with the inmate can develop. We provide dharma pen pals as well, and have provided PIs for motivated prisoners who are serious about developing a structured meditation path.
