Nalanda West is Nalandabodhi's international center for the study and practice of the
teachings of wisdom and compassion that originated in
India over 2500 years ago. Our Seattle facility, inaugurated in 2005, offers a
gateway
in the Western
Hemisphere
to the
living
inheritance
of insight and skillful means embodied in the storied
traditions of Nalanda
University.
Nalanda was the name
of the great Buddhist university that flourished for
some 1800 years in ancient India. The word Nalanda
translates from the Sanskrit as "the
place that confers the lotus (of enlightened knowledge)."
At Nalanda West, we present the authentic tradition
of Buddhist study, meditation, and compassionate activity
through
a regular schedule of programs, including trainings in
philosophy and logic, meditation retreats, leadership
and arts workshops and special topic seminars, such as
health and well being, dramatic arts, and the Buddhist
view of death and dying.
Through the formation of an
international events center in a major metropolitan area,
the current generation
of established, traditional Buddhist teachers and the
newly developing cross-cultural generation of Buddhist
students and emerging teachers come together to
make available these rare gems of our human inheritance.
We are pledged to support and foster the development
of
a genuine
and vital
Buddhist
tradition within our contemporary cultures.

Nalanda
University in India flourished for hundreds of years as one of the
greatest centers of learning in the world before succumbing to invasions
of India in the 10th century C.E. The photograph above from the archeological dig site in India is considered by archeologists to depict the main temple of Nalanda University, also referred to as the Shariputra stupa (temple site 3).
