Ruins of ancient Nalanda University The Nalandabodhi Lineage

During the 2500 year history of Buddhism, the teachings have spread from India to the other countries of Asia, including Tibet. Nalandabodhi is connected with the Nyingma and Kagyu schools of Tibetan Buddhism, two of the great schools of Buddhism, which were established in Tibet during the first millennium.

The 7th Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche - 1965- The Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoches

The first Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, Namkha Ösel, was a great 17th century Nyingma yogi and meditation master who co-founded Dzogchen Monastery in Eastern Tibet. Since that time, the Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoches have retained responsibility for the lineage as one of the main Abbots of the monastery.

The Nyingma Lineage

In the eighth century, while the great buddhist traditions were flourishing in India, King Trisong Detsen invited a great abbot of Nalanda, the leading Buddhist university in ancient India, and an incomparable Vajra master of India, to Tibet. Together, they established buddhism to Tibet.

His Holiness The 17th Gyalwang Karmapa The Kagyu Lineage The essence of the Kagyu lineage is described by its name. The first syllable "Ka" refers to the scriptures of the Buddha and the oral instructions of the guru. The word carries a sense of enlightened vision and has the connotation of a wisdom command. The second syllable "gyu" means lineage or tradition. So, together, Kagyu means "the lineage of the oral instructions."
