“Water has no form, no shape, no color. It is
transparent; it’s free. Water is flexible in adapting
to the shape and color of any container. Similarly, there
is
a wisdom of enlightenment, a compassion of enlightenment,
that has no color, no shape, no culture, no language,
no tradition. It is simply pure and genuine wisdom and
compassion, just like pure water. This water of Dharma
goes beyond all forms, structures, colors, traditions
or language. It is a totally pure elixir that can heal
the pain, suffering, confusion and ignorance of all sentient
beings of the six realms, from the hell realm all the
way to the heavenly realm.
“To preserve this water, this elixir, this genuine
wisdom, genuine compassion and blessing of the lineages,
we must
depend upon a container. How can we preserve water without
a container? Similarly, this pure, genuine wisdom and
compassion of enlightenment also needs to be transferred
from container to container, from century to century,
from person to person, from country to country, just
like pouring water from one container into another. This
elixir of Dharma has been transferred from the original
Indian container, the Indian culture and language, to
a Chinese container, to various Southeast Asian containers,
and so on. So many different containers! And, as I am
always reminding you: now this genuine Dharma elixir
is coming to our culture here in the Western hemisphere.
So it has to be transferred to a Western container. In
order to pour this Dharma into a Western container, we
must make our container as pure and genuine as possible,
so that we can receive and preserve this water, and thus
continue to benefit countless sentient beings, just as
has been done in the past.
“So there must be water, a container and a person to
pour the water. If one is missing, the water cannot be
transferred.
“Everything is possible,
you know. We are able to bring the genuine lineage here
because of three components coming together. It’s
not because a teacher is here, it’s not because
a student is here, it’s not just because the Dharma
is here; but it’s all three coming together. That’s
the effective means to bring that genuine lineage, that
genuine wisdom and compassion of Buddha’s teachings
here to the West. In order to do that, the container
is vital. Without the container, the elixir cannot be
transferred in any form.”
